Sunflowers (Helianthus annuus) is an annual plant with a large daisy-like flower face. Its scientific name comes from the Greek words helios (“sun”) and anthos (“flower”). The flowers come in many colors (yellow, red, orange, maroon, brown) but they are commonly bright yellow with brown centers that ripen into heavy heads filled with seeds. Sunflowers are heliotropic, which means that they turn their flowers to follow the movement of the Sun across the sky east to west, and then returns at night to face the east, ready again for the morning sun. Heliotropism happens during the earlier stages before the flower grows heavy with seeds. The leaves are used as fodder, the flowers yield a yellow dye, and the seeds contain oil and are used for food. The sweet yellow oil obtained by compression of the seeds is considered equal to olive or almond oil for table use. Sunflower oil cake is used for stock and poultry feeding. HOW TO GROW: Once received keep the plant in natural indirect bright Light. Do not re-pot for minimum two weeks after receiving it. Water when top soil (1-2inches) feels dry to touch. The plant will grow just about anywhere and under a wide range of environmental conditions. Dig a hole somewhat shallower than the length of the root ball. Place the plant in the hole and replace soil, tamping firmly as you go. Water sufficiently. Water thoroughly after planting. Thereafter, water as needed to keep the soil evenly and consistently moist. In our experience, one to two weeks depending on the season is necessary to reestablish the plant happily.*Care instructions: Take care as your child. Protect from pest and insects.
